Kinds of Theater Event Lovers and Etiquettes
Straight Plays, Musicales, and Improv
There are several types of plays and different types of theater event lovers! Let’s take a quick look at these different kinds and what makes each one tick!
STRAIGHT PLAY LOVERS – Straight plays are loosely defined as the more orthodox and conventional theater plays. No singing, no dancing, just straight-up in-your-face hardcore theater acting. Reminiscent of Hamlet of Macbeth, straight plays are for the serious, more classical theater event lovers.
MUSICALE LOVERS – Although Musicales have been playing for decades, the rise in popularity is enormous in the last few years. Musicale lovers adore the iconic shows like Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, and Les Miserables among others, but new plays like Wicked, Lion King, and other movie adaptations have ignited interest for the musicale!
IMPROV – A loose script, lots of adlib, and dynamic stage acting makes improv witty and charming. Improv Lovers like the suddenness and the surprise of not knowing what to expect and the allure of having a different kind of show every night!
Aside from the common rules inside the theater, we have a quick rundown of some theater etiquette you may want to remember on your next trip to the play!
NO INTERACTION PLEASE – although the show is live, you are not part of it (unless specified). Do not interact with the actors and the production. No touching, throwing of objects, and certainly no speaking to the cast!
CLAP ONLY AT THE END OF SCENES – this is one rule of thumb that most people forget. The show may be great and you feel excited, but clapping is only reserved at the end of certain scenes. I’m afraid you cannot clap anytime you want.
DON’T SING ALONG! – musicales can fill our emotion and move us to sing. But unless you’re part of the cast, please reserve the singing to the people on stage. Believe me, the people sitting next to you will appreciate it very much.
