APCC 2017 Memorable Highlights
There are many things to geek out about the convention that happened last August 25 – 27. Here are the things that stood out the most!
The Cosplay Community
Crossplay of Graffiti Tracer and Reaper from Overwatch
Let’s be honest here. Filipino cosplayers are awesome! Hands down. If you say otherwise, then you probably weren’t at APCC 2017. Walking around the show floor felt like living in a world where everything I love came to life. I’m going to paint the picture for you. When I look to my left, I could see Genji and Winston walking around looking at the different art prints that were on sale. Looking to my right, I could see Flash and Kid Flash zipping through all the stalls which had collectibles. It was so magical. Maybe someday I would be able to join the Filipino Geek community in dressing up as one of my favorite characters.
The Highest Form of Appreciation
Personally, I can’t find a better way to express how much you like something than cosplaying. Not only does it show how much you love a certain property or character, it also shows how much you know about a franchise. Cosplay is not simply putting on a costume. It’s about becoming the character you’re emulating and let me tell you Filipinos have a knack for it. But don’t just take my word for it, you already saw a few pictures of the awesome cosplayers at AsiaPOP Comicon.
Famous Cosplayers Joined in the Activities
Philip Odango, Haiden Hazard, Jin from BEHINDINFINITY,Pion Kim, and Alodia Gosiengfiao
APCC gathered both well seasoned cosplayers and fanatics to the festivities. It was amazing to see the likes of Alodia Gosiengfiao, Jin from BEHINDINFINITY, Haiden Hazard, Philip Odango, Myrtle Abigail Sarrosa, and Pion Kim all together on one stage. I’m sure it was very inspirational for all the Filipino Cosplayers who want to make it big in the future. These heavy hitters all gathered at the convention to judge a contest of epic proportions.
Pros Wow Audiences During CAGE
Geno Breaker solo cosplay using puppeteering
It was pretty awesome to see contest level cosplay! The stage was set and everyone who entered CAGE (Cosplay Authority Global Challenge) certainly didn’t pull any punches. The judges certainly had their hands full deciding which of the contestants would win.
Cosplayers portray the ship for Genji and Mercy
It seemed like video game characters ruled the stage during the adult category of CAGE. We could see characters from Overwatch like Mei, Genji, and Winston make an appearance on stage. Other contestants sported massive cosplay like, War Machine, Geno Breaker, and characters from Warhammer 40k.
Gaku Space with Genji and Mercy cosplayer
One of the coolest moments during the contest was when Gaku Space congratulated a Genji Cosplayer and shouted his famous “ryujin no ken wo kurae!” line on stage. The fans went wild and the whole hall echoed with cheers.
It was like Winston jumped of the screen and to the stage!
Ultimately the grand price went to Winston from Overwatch and it was a well deserved win!
Kids Show They Can Cosplay as Good as Adults
Good vs Evil! Mercy and Morgana cosplay by the kids at CAGE
CAGE wasn’t just for the adults though! I was stunned by the level of detail of the kid’s cosplay. It’s amazing to see the love for cosplay at a very young age and it helps that their parents are so supportive as well! Let me tell you, those kids can act and they play their characters so well. I personally loved the girls who played 2B (Nier: Automata), Mercy, and Morgana. They were also cute in their cosplay!
All in all, the cosplay at APCC will always be memorable. I can’t wait to see what everyone has in store for us next year! Cosplay wasn’t the only thing that made AsiaPOP Comicon exciting though! Let’s talk about all that merch.
