Does Dragon Quest Heroes 2 Outshine Dynasty Warriors?
Square Enix is popular for working on JRPGs which influenced the genre throughout gaming history. In recent years, Square Enix has been mixing up the RPG formula by adding elements from other games. Dragon Quest Heroes is a series which does this. It takes one of their most popular franchises since 1986 and combines it with the hack-and-slash combat made popular by Koei Tecmo.
Is Dragon Quest Heroes just another “Warriors” game or does it outshine the series which formula it borrows? Here are the reasons why Dragon Quest Heroes II might be better than Dynasty Warriors.
Not just Dynasty Warriors with a Dragon Quest Skin
Dragon Quest Heroes II does borrow a lot from the Warriors franchise. You mainly take control of a hero and battle hordes of enemies while protecting various map objectives, but that is where similarities end.
What is Square Enix known for? That’s right, RPGS. The RPG Element that has been added really changes up the formula of Dragon Quest Heroes. Yes, you still control one character but your character is followed by party members which have different skills to aid you in battle.
Dragon Quest Heroes is less about decimating a giant army and more about completing objectives. Stages you play fall into categories like: “eliminate all enemies”, “defend an area and destroy enemy spawn points”, and “kill the giant boss monster”.
Yes, at its core Dragon Quest Heroes II is a Dynasty Warriors game. You hack thousands enemies to complete a mission, but the experience is renewed thanks to the RPG mechanics that have been added to the game. The first iteration in the series was fun, but only had a single player mode. The multiplayer mode added to Dragon Quest Heroes II was a much needed addition and will definitely add to the enjoyment of this game.
Is it better than Dynasty Warriors? As someone who already enjoyed the hack-and-slash game-play of the Warriors franchise I can honestly say that Dragon Quest Heroes II is a refreshing improvement to its formula.
