FanFes Manila 2018
We get to experience the country’s first-ever convention dedicated for the fans of fan arts and original content – the FanFes Manila 2018. Happened last May 12, 2018 at the SMX Aura, this event held a haven where our homegrown artists and their fans can connect. But, why is this a first-of-its-kind event?
Before, we could only get the chance to communicate with our favorite local artists either through their blogs, social medias, planned meet-ups or gatherings, or scheduled events. Other artists don’t prefer to be on events so it was hard to catch up with them and meet them personally. They were not even given a spotlight on events, only on the sidelines. There were only few dedicated events solely for them. But now, thanks to Cosplay.ph for bringing us, fans, to meet them up-close! Through this convention, we get to know them and their art better.
YuneOh FanFes Manila 2018 Favorite Artists
We got to meet new and all-time favorite artists, bought a haul of fan arts, and relished the fan out of us. Check out below our favorite artists, their arts, and why we love them!
Surfacage
This year’s FanFes’ special guest artist is Surfaçage! She is the artist behind our favorite Pokemon Go comic – And the World will Turn to Ash. What we like about her art is she plays between realistic and manga style. Added from being realistic, it has this dark and strong vibe in it. We can also see in her art style the playfulness when she needs to. As an artist, you should be a bit playful and experimental.
Did you know that aside from being an artist and a gamer, she is also a Software Engineer by day? How cool is that? In order to work and play at the same time, you should have a strong work-life balance. How do you do it PokeMaster? Teach us your ways.
Learn more about Surfaçage, or Surfi, as we Meet&Geek with her here. Follow Surfaçage on: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Patreon, Instagram.
VARHUES
VARHUES is a group of three artists and animators namely: John Michael Perez, Raymond Javier, and Leo Divina. Their name VARHUES is a word play of variety of hues or colors mixed and matched to create dreams of designs. As you can see, they work true to their words. Their art plays a lot on colors which also do not overwhelm the subject and creates a dynamic combination and harmony between the subject and the background.

Aves.Yna
Dark yet colorful. That’s the art style that makes Yna so unique for us at FanFes. We simply got mesmerized on how she brings color to a dark yet deep scenes of her art. She got to share with us that her art style consists of, yes, dark background, backlight, gold color, and strong outlines. Her style got that mature vibes yet playful on the scenes, and we like that! As you can see, she’s into the Marvel universe, and we couldn’t agree more.
She’s also into paper cutting! Check out her art and follow Aves.Yna on Instagram @aves.yna.
Papel de Pinay Papercuts
What caught our very attention during our stay on FanFes is this intricate paper cut art of our favorite anime and pop culture icons. We know that paper cutting is a very complex and elaborate form of paper art but Papel de Pinay did it like its no one’s business. She brings our pop culture icons into an elegant form of art that are ready to make your altar a little edgy. One of our faves from her art is the paper cut of Tuxedo Mask surrounded by thorns and roses. Papel de Pinay, we want to see more!

Pixel Hero
Pixelated art came back to the art scene pixel by pixel and we’ve never seen such artist who is much into pixel art. And Pixel Hero is the hero we didn’t think we need! FanFes Manila 2018 Takeaways
Here are the loots I got from Aves.Yna, Silverohs, Pixel Hero, Tonerukun, and Raymond Javier of VARHUES.
I really really love the Black Panther fan art by Aves.Yna, because WAKANDA FOREVER! Kidding aside, it got my attention from the first seconds I got to her booth. I really like the hues, lighting, shadows, every vibes in it. It is so cool yet so dark with its gold and black combination. I like the goth underground feel on it.
And these BNHA stickers from Silverohs because they’re just too cute! BNHA characters as chibi food, how can they get any cuter! If you like cutesy stuff, I suggest Silverohs! Follow her on IG @silverohs.
If only my wallet was ready and prepared that day, I would buy more from them and from the other artists as well. So lesson learned, bring enough pocket money for your goods. There is still next FanFes anyways, right? Hoping to see them, and you, again for the part two of FanFes!
Once again, a big thanks to Cosplay.ph and all its organizers for making this event to happen. It was sure a fun geeky and artsy experience for the fandom! And we wish a second time! Hoping to have more geek eventures with you!
