As a geek, the right way to start the year is, of course, to geek out! Manila Hobbies & Collectibles Convention 2018 is the first con of our year! In it’s 3rd year now, Hobby at Worx still delivered a good job at organizing this collectors’ haven.
Manila Hobbies & Collectibles Convention 2018 Highlights
Manila Hobbies & Collectibles promises its con-goers a two-day geek event that will surely be enjoyed by geeks, hobbyists, collectors, and casual goers. They didn’t fail us to do so. It was surely packed of hobbyists and collectors with their newly bought collectibles.
This two-day event happened last January 20-21 at the SM Megamall, Megatrade Hall 3. Even though it is right after the holidays, hobbyists and collectors didn’t miss out this first collectibles convention of the year. This year’s Manila Hobbies & Collectibles 2018 never let us down with its impressive offers! What are those? What makes this event the bang of the year? We list down the things we experienced in this year’s Manila Hobbies & Collectibles.
At Manila Hobbies & Collectibles Convention we found overflowing collectibles!
Action figures are a must to anime or pop culture fans. There’s always a sense of accomplishment when you see your collection slowly growing. You can only feel complete when you collect all the different poses of your favorite 2D character. I mean, it always feels great to complete something right? Luckily at this convention, you can find every action figures to keychains to rare figurines and in a cheap price? How good of a deal is that?
If you are a fan of Star Wars, there is also an exhibit display on the event with fun settings! Just look at Chewbacca princess-carry Princess Leia. Only Star Wars fans know why!
I had fun shooting these Batman and Joker figurines! They are set just right!
There are also Dragon Ball Series exhibit display which features fun settings and also a shrine for the late DB voice actress Hiromi Tsuru.
Check out other display figures here which includes Deadpool, Spiderman, Dark Phoenix from X-Men, Michael Jordan, etc.
Speaking of action figures, we got the chance to meet the Filipino Geeks’ Pride, Elmer “Tsinelas Boy” Padilla.
It’s always amazing to meet and greet some of our country’s pride, and since it was our first time seeing Padilla we didn’t let our chance to talk to him slip.
As you may know, Padilla is the boy who’s doing action figures from recycled flip flops, which went viral in social media. And it doesn’t stop there, thru the help of ABS-CBN his action figures reached two of the renowned Hollywood actors Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth who are starring in the film Thor: Ragnarok at that time. He made Hulk for Ruffalo and Thor for Hemsworth.
Believe it or not, this #Hulk doll is made out of recycled tsinelas (that’s tagalog for flip-flops). Elmer Padilla made this for me so I just wanted to give a nice shoutout. Not only is this inventively creative, but it’s sustainable and just pure awesome! Thank you Elmer! pic.twitter.com/JiA4E91LjZ

“Bumabalik balik po ako sa mga tindahan ng laruan para kopyahin yung hitsura ng mga laruang gusto ko (I always go to toy stores to copy the figures of my favorite toys),” Padilla recalled. He remembered copying them by touching the figures and memorizing the details. Back then, he’s just doing his own action figures just for fun.
Padilla worked as a pedicab driver in Samar before relocating his family in Cavite, with trying out construction works in mind. When he cannot get any construction job because of lack of requirements, he decided to try to do his hobby again and sell it in the streets.
When his story went viral and a lot of people are interested in the action figures he’s making, Jessica Soho’s program brought him to Jerry Santos, owner of Life Size Toys and Collectibles. To support Padilla, Santos is always bringing him in different geek conventions. He also wants to train him to better improve his figures and to stay in the business for a long time.
“I want him to stay relevant and nurture his talents. He’s really good, he just have to master his craft,” Santos said during our interview.
During the Manila Hobbies and Collectibles Convention 2018, Padilla also gave a simple workshop on how he do his “tsinelas action figure”. Most of the con-goers eagerly went to the center hall to see him do his craft and applauded once he finished.
As of the moment, Padilla is only taking orders thru the conventions he’s attending. They’re also announcing his schedules through his social media pages.
It’s very inspiring to see people like Padilla who once dreamt and now realizing his dreams.
With the booming era of technology, people still rely on hardbound comics for their geek updates. As a collector, it is a must to get your hands first on the rarest and limited cool stuff. At Manila Hobbies & Collectibles Convention, you can get a comics for 50 pesos! If you’re more into comics and on a little budget, you can haggle them on a convention like this!
GUNPLA stands for “Gundam Plastic Models” and are model kits that depict the different vehicles and characters of the fictional Gundam universe by Bandai. The series has been in production since the 1980’s and have been satisfying mecha and anime fans for generation.
Gundam Philippines held a caravan sale at Manila Hobbies & Collectibles Convention. Your favorite MG Gundams are on huge sale. Imagine you can bring home one for 2K? Yes, I know, I also cried when I can’t even buy MG Gundam on sale.
They also held a build-your-own-gundam activity on site. While the model kit given to participants was not that difficult to make, it still served as a fun way to introduce convention attendees to the world of GUNPLA.
Trading cards are also something that people love to collect. Manila Hobbies & Collectibles Convention had a lot of booths which sold these cards. If you were savvy enough you could even find the card you need at a discounted price. Magic: The Gathering fans would be pleased wit the abundant selection of boosters and singles that were offered in the area. If you’re into Pokemon cards, Final Fantasy, they had those as well.
Being a collector doesn’t stop from just collecting figurines. It has to have something personal. At Manila Hobbies & Collectibles Convention you can meet artists who can make original art specially made just for you. The artists were drawing the whole day and for a small fee they would draw any character you commissioned them to illustrate.
For an artist like me, this section inspired and motivated me to do my own art too. They were all pretty cool that I also want to be with them and have my own table at the convention. I’ve learned alot about different styles as I watched them draw at once.
One of the exciting event that happened is the Costrip Competition. A term new to you? Costrip is a play word in cosplay community which “cos” means cosplay and “trip” means for fun. Its origin is still unknown but is already used here in the Philippines for so long. It is a competition where cosplayers can be their own character out of their own closet. It is just a matter of execution and audience impact.
For the Costrip winner, The Clown won YuneOh premiums and an airbrush makeup from HobbiWorx with her female version of Pennywise. On point! Congratulations!
Manila Hobbies & Collectibles Convention 2018 was a fun experience. It surely live up to its promise to give its fans a collectibles haven. We had a great time spazzing and meeting new friends in the geek community. The whole hall was packed with hobbyists and collectors who are eager to fill up their collectibles shrine. All in all, it wouldn’t be a success if its not for the full support of all the geeks to this two-day event. We hope for more geek conventions like this on the following months and years! Make sure to follow Hobby at Worx to find out when their next convention will happen! And, of course, here at YuneOh, we bring all the freshest Geek Events updates for you.
