Why are Filipinos such avid collectors? Let’s start on the street. Little boys and girls would pick up bottlecaps and “text” cards with cartoon characters and keep them in shoeboxes. The more, the better. Young boys once fawned over NBA collectible trading cards of their favorite basketball stars. Ladies would search far and wide for shoes, jewelry, and other trinkets that were once owned by celebrities. Grown men would spend hundreds of thousands of pesos (sometimes millions) to acquire classic cars and automobiles for their garage collection. Like with many other things such as music, sports, and celebrities, Filipinos also share the passion for collecting memorabilia!
Our country has a rich history. From our native tribal roots, our long Spanish cultural heritage, our deeply rooted Chinese traditions, and the American and even British influence, we have been part of a melting pot of cultures that now stems over the things we like to have and collect. This translates to items, figurines, sculptures, artworks, paintings, toys, jewelry, anything that can have historical or cultural significance is a treasure for us!
Let us not forget that collecting pieces of history is a form of respect to that history. It shows us how much we treasure and give significance to that part of our culture. So keep on collecting!
