Hey pet parents! Having a pet is one of the most rewarding experiences that once can actually have in a lifetime. Imagine coming home to your best friend running to the door to meet you with their tails wagging aiming in for a welcome home lick!Throughout the years, I have learned that pet parenting is a serious responsibility. It is so much more than coming home to a cute pup and giving them ear scratches and belly rubs…
…It is actually caring for them, spending time with them and raising them to be good dogs living a balanced life. To begin with, here are some of the pet parent approved dog essentials to have in handy to start your incredible journey with your dog.
Dog Collar and Leash
Your puppy will need a collar and a leash. You can choose from different styles and sizes at your local pet store or you can order online. Most importantly, make sure that the collar that you will use fits comfortable enough for your dog to breathe and move around freely. Don’t forget to put his identification tag that should include your name and number in case your dog gets lost. Remember: Snug but not too tight.
In picking a leash, get a length that is short enough to keep your dog from walking far ahead and far behind you and long enough to keep the distance between you and your dog to avoid anyone tripping! I have had a lot of incidents like this! LOL! So I recommend getting the right length, about 4 feet long.
2. Dog Crate
It is a must for any dog owner to get a crate that you can use for when you travel, housetrain and monitor them. You can choose from a variety of containers such as steel crates and lightweight plastic or fiberglass crates.
When choosing a crate, make sure that your dog has enough space to stand up, lie down, turn around and stretch. Do not forget to stuff your dog crate blankets and a pillow for a comfy and warm den.
3. Dog Bed
After you have trained your dog using the dog crate, you can choose from a wide range of cute dog bed with pillows, couches, and mattresses. You can put it in a spot that is comfortable enough for your dog to lay down and accessible to a doggy door for when he wants to “do his business”.
4. Food and Treats
Your dog will need nutrition throughout his growing years. To accommodate the demands of a pup with a big appetite and caloric demands to develop healthy body, bones, skin and coat.
During the first 12 months of your puppy, your veterinarian will recommend a diet that will fit his energy and nutritional needs.
5. Food and water bowl
Again, I want to repeat this, food and water bowl. These are two different bowls that you need to have.
You can choose from plastic bowls, stainless steel bowls and ceramic bowls. All of these have certain advantages and disadvantages that come with it.
Plastic bowls can get dented and scratched over time and may harbor bacteria that can potentially harm your dog. If you see any of these, make sure to replace it with a new one.
Ceramic bowls can hurt your wallet a little because it is a bit pricey and are subject to breakage but they are scratch-free. However, some ceramic bowls may contain lead which is very harmful to your dog.
Stainless steel bowls are the most expensive but it is the best choice. You might mistake it for the silver bowls you see at your local pet store. Remember to check the price as those bowls might be bowls made from tin that can get rusty and poison your dog. The real ones, though, are durable and easy to clean.
6. Toys
Lastly, getting your best friend a toy is one of the best stuff you get for him! Whether it’s a stuffed horse, a chew bone or a tennis ball, I am sure they will adore their toys. This will keep them entertained when you are out for work or busy with the household chores.
Despite all the choices you can find at your pet store, make sure you get only toys that are strong, durable and safe for your dog. They will eventually destroy their toys and your dog might ingest the small particles that may come off.
Are you excited to get these cool stuffs for your best friend? I am too! Enjoy shopping!
