Before the pop-culture landscape was dominated by superhero teams which protected the world from alien’s and alien invasions – That’s right Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, I’m looking at you! – Children had much simpler heroes and concepts to follow. This Earth Day let us remember a hero from the 90’s who came to our planet’s aid when the world was in peril. Gather those magic rings as we pay tribute to Earth’s Greatest Champion, Captain Planet and his Planeteers.
He’s Our Hero Who Takes Pollution Down to Zero
Captain Planet and his Planeteers were admittedly one of the most memorable superheroes that graced our television screens. I remember going home after school excited to see how they would save the planet and environment in the next episode.
Who exactly is Captain Planet? Well, Captain Planet is a hero who Gaea (the spirit of the earth) calls upon to battle evil forces which ruin and pollute the planet. He is summoned when the powers of 5 Magic Rings are combined. His power all comes from the elements of the planet: Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart. Sorry, Aang. You weren’t the first master of the elements! It was Captain Planet.
Captain Planet’s main goal is to protect the planet and keep the environment clean and healthy. It may sound like a funny goal compared to saving the world from Thanos, but when you think of the lessons that he taught kids on planet conservation, you can say that it’s an important battle as well.
The Power is Yours!
The impact of Captain Planet does not end with the cartoon show. A foundation was formed under the name of this superhero. The Captain Planet Foundation focuses on raising the next generation of environmental stewards to have an active understanding and love for the natural world in which they live in.
So this Earth Day let’s be one of Captain Planet’s Planeteers and be a good example for the next generation. Recycle, keep the earth clean and spread information about climate change and pollution prevention. Remember Eventurers, the power is yours!
