Why are people getting angry at Mulan’s Live Action?
First of all, I being a kid who was pacified with Disney movies growing old (and I still love them until now) and whose female heroine happens to be Mulan, I was really upset when I learned that Disney is preparing a remake of this Chinese legend story without music in it. For me, it was like gagging the little girl in me who’s trying to sing “Reflection” in full notes.
With the craze of releasing Disney live action movies, everyone seems to be anticipating what’s next. They have released Cinderella, Maleficent, The Jungle Book and the most recent Beauty and The Beast. All of which includes original characters and original sound tracks. Remakes are being made to re-introduce those Disney heroes and heroines for the next generation.
But why are they “revising” Mulan’s script?
1. According to the Director, “Mulan” might not be a musical
WHY? They haven’t released any statement regarding to why they will eliminate the musical part in the remake. Probably to make it more “live action.” *pun intended*
But one thing is for sure, Director Niki Caro revealed in an interview with Moviefone that they haven’t talk about including songs in the movie.
“We’ve never talked about songs, and no decision has been made. I haven’t even started working on it yet,” she said in an interview with The LA Times.
Oh, it’s a relief that it’s not yet finalized to scarp out the musical part! Let’s pray for the best.
Also, on the other hand, Director Caro clarified the issue in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “The live-action is based on that inspirational Chinese ballad and on the animated Disney classic. We’re still exploring the role that music’s going to play in it, but for sure there will be music,” she shared.
Yey!
2. Aaaaaaand, there’s no Captain Li Shang but a cocky soldier who would fall in love with Fa Mulan
I don’t know but it seems that they should have just make an original film—let’s say starring a descendant of Mulan after 20 years following her paths and everything. It is because without Captain Li Shang and without those remarkable “life songs” it won’t be “Mulan” anymore.
According to a casting call sheet that’s been circulating online, there won’t be a Captain Li Shang in the film but someone named Chen Honghui will materialize. He’s a “recruit who joins Commander Tung’s unit and he’s determined to be the best soldier in human history.” And he will fall in love with our female heroine.
Wait a hot second, why is Captain Li Shang being replaced by this dude in the new #Mulan. First no music, now this. Grrr pic.twitter.com/tE17hM1G7p

So if this casting call sheet is really true, a lot of Disney fans will be mad. And some already took the social media to express their anger.

If the new live action #Mulan doesn’t have the classic and amazing songs in it, I’m not going watch it. #Disney pic.twitter.com/Mkhfkt5TNd

After everything that has been revealed, what do you think is next? JP Brammer said in a tweet: “Mulan director announces there will be no characters at all in the finished project. Only a blank screen onto which we may project our fears.”
Oh, by the way, Director Caro also describes the “updated version” of “Mulan” as a “big, girly martial arts epic. It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving.”
