Pop-Culture has its own set of words that make up a unique vocabulary. Toys, games, comics, movies, books and every other aspect of the hobby world contribute to this wide-growing lingo that fans use. Especially during comic-con and other expos, being in the know of how to speak the language is very important!
YUNEOH here has a short collection of some “need-to-know” words before you head out to your latest event. So take down notes and practice these to expand your fanboy or fangirl lingo!
Chibi- short, small and cute character often done for fan service
Cosplay- Costume Play a.k.a. nerds dressing in costumes (admit we are nerds)
Cosplayer- Someone who practices the art of Cosplaying, dressing as their favorite
character from Anime/manga.
Commissioner- someone who makes costumes for people who can’t, or don’t have time
to make their own costume

LARP – short for “Live Action Role Play”; most commonly done in-costume
Manga-Japanese Comic Books
Otaku- die hard fan/anime nerd/anime geek/etc, often used proudly by ‘self-proclaimed
otaku’ but carries a negative connotation; comes from the Japanese word for
house ( these nerds often stay in the house focused on anime all day instead of
going out)
Shojo- Girls Manga
Shonen- Boys Manga
Always remember that you are entering a unique world with its own perks and fancies! So use your new-found fan language to the hilt. Always be considerate and respectful of everyone there. Have fun!
