The soft pitter-patter of rain on the window. The alluring scent of cocoa from that steaming cup by your side. A comfy corner to snuggle into for hours. The stage is set for you to resume the adventures of your latest favorite character. You turn the page…
Such is the allure of books that in today’s ever-bustling society, nothing relaxes you more than simply switching off and catching up on a good read.
So what is it about books that are so addicting?
Like Dr. Who’s police-box shaped vehicle, books enable you to travel through time and space. From Mr. Gatsby’s lavish parties in the Roaring Twenties, Narnia’s enchanting woodlands, to surviving the Capitol’s desolate games, there’s an exciting experience awaiting the readers within the safety of their own homes.
You get to know the characters. Grow to love and hate them. Share with their victories and mourn with their defeats. You sympathize with them. Who didn’t get their hearts gutted at a certain wedding in A Storm of Swords? In turn, with our experience placing ourselves in the characters’ shoes, we learn to do the same with people we encounter everyday. We become a bit more understanding.
Did anyone else shed a tear when Amir makes this promise to Sohrab in “The Kite Runner”?
