Maria Gilda Quintia-Nakahara was born on August 16, 1971 at San Julian, Eastern Samar. She was born deaf but that didn’t stop her from achieving her dreams. She finished her basic education at the Philippine School for the Deaf and took vocational courses at the CAP College for the Deaf and Manila Christian Computer Institute.
Because of her passion in travelling, she met foreign and Filipino friends who inspired her to start her own business. She started her own travel and tour agency in 2004 which she called “Nakahara Lodging and Travel Agency” known for giving world-class service to deaf and non-deaf travellers all over the world. In 2007, she was one of the four other outstanding PWD entrepreneurs awarded by the “Go Negosyo Caravan for People with Disabiities” in De LaSalle –College of St. Benilde. Her success tip? She believes in “quick, quality service and the age-old Filipino hospitality”. In an interview, she said “As a deaf person in this kind of business, I am proud to say that I have crossed the border of so-called limited access. I honestly worked hard to achieve my goals. I wanted to show the world that we are not cut off from mainstream society and we are capable of regularly doing and keeping our jobs like the rest of hearing and speaking people.”
Aside from this, she involves herself in a number of activities in her hometown. She has established a deaf organization in Eastern Samar which brought together all the deaf people from five towns in her province. She is currently working on putting up an organization that will provide emergency assistance to the deaf community in the Philippines.
With hard work and discipline, she is able to juggle thousands of bookings, flights and accommodations in the Philippines and abroad. She kept herself grounded on her passion for travel, focused on her objectives to provide quality service to her clients and driven to share to the world the beauty of her country. She goes by the motto, honouring commitments.
