Dia De Los Muertos
The three-day celebration of the “Day of the Dead” starts from October 31 to November 2. People flock the streets during this celebration. The Mexican people bring out beautiful Marigolds, sumptuous bread, and lots of cardboard skeletons to celebrate the remembrance of family and friends who have passed away. This celebration is at the heart of Coco. And family is at the core of all the values that you will see there.
Candles and Marigolds
Can you see all the flowers in the show? Did you know that candles are symbolic? Candles show us that they could light the way for our ancestors to come see us. Pick a Marigold and look at its beauty. It is not only nice to look at, but it helps connect loved ones to their existing family. Altars at home are connected to the cemetery by rows and rows of Marigolds. Give a candle to a family member to show the light of the way home.
They Actually Know Guitar Chords
Look closely at how their fingers move over the fret of the guitars. Can you see how the fingers rise and fall? Yep! They are playing actual guitar chords in the film! This is a great treat for guitar enthusiasts and musicians all over. This move keeps things real and authentic when we watch the movie.
Dante the Dog is a Xoloitzcuintli, Mexico’s National Dog
The cool guys over at Pixar invited several Xolo dogs into their office! The animators deeply learned about how these dogs act around different situations. Artists also did their best to capture the natural look and movements of the beloved National Dog of Mexico. This is how we came to know and love the wonderful dog Dante that will appear in the film!
The Designers Created over 500 Pieces of Individual Designs for Clothing
Pixar does things right. They created hundreds of sketches and designs to get the look as correctly as possible. The artists created a lot dresses and skirts and shirts and gowns. The characters were given new looks and new life as the designs were all studied and then hand-drawn. Each of the characters located in the town and the City of the Dead had very symbolic and individual looks.
The Director of Coco Speaks Up
Lee Unkrich talks about the making of Coco. And says many things about trying his best to stay true to the Mexican and Latino Community. He says this in a recent interview with Business Insider:
Learning About the Day of the Dead
“It wasn’t until I started to learn about the tradition, and what it was truly all about, and its history, that I started to really see the potential of telling a story that could be very adventurous and visually dazzling, full of music and color, but could also have a real emotional resonance,” Unkrich told Business Insider. “And that’s what we’re all really looking for ultimately in the stories that we tell. We don’t want to just tell a story that’s gimmicky and clever….Many of us have lost loved ones and have spent time thinking about them and wanting to keep their memories alive, so we felt even though this was a culturally specific setting for our story that it was going to be full of ideas that people all over the world could relate to,” Unkrich said.
Getting As Authentic As Possible
“We ended up bringing in periodically big groups of all sorts of folks from the Latino community, from artists to writers to political figures to media executives, because we wanted to get a lot of different perspectives,” Unkrich said. “What we quickly learned is there is no one right way to tell a story set in the Latino community, there are a lot of different opinions. Part of our challenge was trying to navigate all those different opinions to figure out our path forward.”
Stories for Change
“I think a lot of great change in history has come from stories and storytelling, there’s a power to it,” he said. “The one thing that everyone knows for sure these days is that we’re living in super unpredictable times. All I can really say is that I firmly believe that by bringing this movie out we’re trying to be part of the solution rather than trying to be part of the problem.”
A Film for the Family
Coco looks to be another promising hit. The animation is smooth and the colors are bright and visually stunning. Kids will absolutely love the characters in the film. Have you seen the trailer yet?
