Sophie Turner is returning as Jean Grey in X-Men: Dark Phoenix
The world was introduced to Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark in the Game of Thrones series by HBO. But her star has been steadily rising and I believe she was beautifully cast as Jean Grey in the X-Men: Apocalypse. We all know that actress Famke Janssen famously carried the role of Jean Grey from the first X-Men film until X-Men: The Last Stand. But since the timeline was changed in Days of Future Past, a new generation of actors were cast as the students of Xavier’s School and they will eventually form the X-Men. The great power inside Jean was crucial to their victory over Apocalypse in the said film, but hints of it being dark and uncontrollable were problematic for James McAvoy’s Professor Xavier. And I believe we will finally get a glimpse of it as the mutant story continues in X-Men: Dark Phoenix!
Jean Grey Becomes The Dark Phoenix
In the original comics as well as the animated series, Jean Grey was an extremely powerful mutant. As one of the few Omega-level mutants, Jean possesses amazing telepathic and telekinetic abilities that enable her to read and control minds as well as manipulate the things around her with mere thought. Due to this power, a cosmic entity known as The Phoenix chose her to be her vessel. This being merged with her and thus she became The Dark Phoenix. She became a being of pure power capable of massive destruction. This energy became uncontrollable and she became a threat to the world and to her fellow X-Men. Her teammates namely Storm, Cyclops, Jubilee, Rogue, Beast, and Wolverine all fought to contain her but to no avail. In the end Jean had to sacrifice herself to defeat the manipulative force of the Phoenix which resulted to her death. In the films, we saw a bit of this in X-Men: The Last Stand when Magneto coerced Jean to unleash her powers. But fan reception was low and many disagreed with the way the Phoenix story-line was made. But now with a new Jean Grey in the form of Sophie Turner and a time reboot, new possibilities open up for a more loyal and more exciting rendition of the Phoenix Saga in the upcoming film X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
It is indeed a wonderful time to be a comic-book fan. Movies about our favorite characters are being made left and right. And stories we only used to read before in the pages of a comic are being made available for us to watch on the big screen! I can’t wait to see the future of the X-Men in the upcoming films, I believe that Sophie Turner is a wonderful choice for Jean Grey. And I can’t wait for her to fully become The Phoenix!
