Perhaps you’re taking a break in between jobs, looking into developing your own business, or simply in need of extra income. Whatever your reason, here are some pros and cons to help you decide whether freelancing is for you!
Overall, freelancing entails a flexible work schedule and environment. Work at your most productive hours or schedule it around your other activities (e.g. with family or other interests). Work from your own home, a favorite café, or even while travelling! Then again, given such a flexible setting, the line between work and leisure time may be significantly blurred (e.g. working beyond the regular work hours).

Conversely, freelance work necessitates directly dealing with the clientele. You have more leeway when it comes to selecting projects. For example, your output quality may be better if you’re working on assignments that personally interest you. Likewise, this implies reaping all of the profits and less expenses (e.g. less tax liability, less travel costs). On the other hand, this also means a much more unstable source of income as your earnings are strictly dependent on your clientele and actual payments flow.

Nevertheless, with freelance work, you’re your own boss. You’re in charge of everything and are free to run the business as you please. However, ‘with great power comes great responsibility’ and by being in charge of everything, we mean EVERYTHING. From innovation, production, marketing and sales, to finances, you’ll have to stress over way more concerns. Thus, freelancing requires a strict work ethic that’s both disciplined and organized.
